My Journey into Model Making: Lighting Up the Star Trek Enterprise
In 2014, I started my first model-making project: adding LEDs and fiber optics to Star Trek starships. I've always loved The Next Generation, and those ships are perfect for lighting up with their iconic details.
My first build (Enterprise E) was rough - lots of learning on the fly. The second (Enterprise D) was bigger and better with 3x more lights.
Miniature model making: Imperial Star Destroyer
I only have pictures of the final result for this one. It has three 3mm blue LEDs for the engines and one white LED powering the fibers.
Miniature model making: USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A)
I started this hobby in 2014 with fiber optics (see my Enterprise E project). After 10 years, I wanted a smaller challenge - this tiny 1701-A miniature. It has only one LED and no windows on the main body.
Miniature model making: USS 1701-B (Excelsior)
This was one of my trickier builds. Unlike earlier pre-painted models, I had to paint this 1/2500 scale ship myself and apply delicate decals. The work needed careful sequencing: drill, sand, insert fibers, paint, varnish, apply decals, and final varnish. No going back to fix mistakes. Here's the original unpainted model from a three-ship set:
A rocket with probiotic bottles
I built a rocket toy for our kid using probiotic bottles. This project helped me learn how to paint with acrylics and simulate engine fire.
A Bluey and Bingo themed cake
No electronics here, just a Bluey and Bingo themed cake for our son. I kept it healthy - no sugar or butter. Sponge and crushed weet-bix for the base, crushed biscuits for sand, and jelly for the ocean. First time trying this, and I'm happy with how it turned out 😀
